About Ian Gurfield:

Ian Gurfield is the cofounder of Ian’s Pizza and Batch Bakehouse. An entrepreneur at heart, Gurfield started his first business, Ian’s Pizza, in 2001 when he was just 23 years old. Since then, he’s been an investor in multiple food businesses, real estate endeavors, and clean tech startups.

Gurfield was born and raised in Massachusetts, but also spent five years in Brazil, his mother’s native country. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts–Amherst, where he earned a multidisciplinary degree focused on social thought and political economy.

Sauna and Cold Plunge at Madison Saunas (November 12, 2026)

Come try out Madison's newest sauna experience! Opening November 2026, Madison Saunas is a sauna experience on the shores of Lake Wingra that connects people to each other and to the lake. Join us as we embrace the weather, celebrate the elements, and come together in the age-old tradition of sauna.

First time at a sauna? Arrive a little early, check in, and settle in. During your session, you can move at your own pace between the wood-fired sauna, cool air or cold water, and rest. Most guests repeat that heat-cold-rest cycle several times. There is no perfect formula and no experience is required. Our goal is to make sauna in Madison feel welcoming, social, and easy to try for the first time. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after your visit.

What to bring:

Bring two towels (one to sit on, one to dry off with), wear a swimsuit, bring a water bottle, and warm easy-to-layer clothing for before and after your session. In winter, bring a hat, warm footwear, and a robe or large towel if you like having an extra layer between sauna rounds. If you plan to use Lake Wingra or another cold-water option, water shoes or sandals are mandatory for the lake plunge. Free lockers are available to secure valuables and electronics.
