About Mario Gahona:

My name is Mario Gahona, I was born and raised in Ecuador. My brothers and I grew up without parents so I started working at age ten, sculpting marble figurines. My wage was equivalent to a penny a week in US dollars. When I came to the US in 2002 I didn’t know any English but I was determined to learn, working odd jobs until I was able to hold a conversation. Once I learned the language I realized there was so much opportunity here for me. I started taking sewing lessons because my mother was a seamstress, and then I was hired by Gino Monetti at his shop, Monetti Tailoring. I worked for him for 7 years before I bought the business in 2014. Since then, the business has nearly doubled in size and continues to grow each year.

How did I start sewing?

I went to a designer one day in Minnesota to see if he could make me a shirt and he mentioned to another customer that he wanted to teach classes. This was our conversation:

If I’m good at it, would you hire me?

No.

Then I don’t want to take the classes.

Why not?

If my own teacher doesn’t want to hire me, why should I take classes?

How can I hire you if you have no experience?

You didn’t understand my question, IF I’m good, would you hire me?

If you’re good I will hire you.

We strive to be an inclusive organization and encourage our members to engage with, learn from, and develop an understanding of others. We prioritize the safety of our community and expect behavior that exhibits respect for all people and supports these values at all Magnet gatherings.
